Law & Leadership Youth Academy

The Law & Leadership Summer Youth Academy is a one-week community outreach program that provides Riverside County youth an opportunity to hone their leadership skills while learning about the criminal justice system.  Students in 8th and 9th grade meet with experts in a variety of fields including attorneys, victim advocates, investigators, K-9 officers, forensic technicians, probation officers and judges to understand their roles in the court system.  Participants also gain valuable hands-on experience by practicing forensic techniques including fingerprinting and crime scene investigation.

Throughout the week, the Academy emphasizes the importance of higher education.  College admissions experts, accompanied by a panel of college students, navigate youth through the college application process and provide a glimpse into college life.  Students explore their passions, engage in goal setting, and enhance their leadership skills by participating in character and team-building activities.  The week concludes with a tour of a criminal courthouse where students step into the shoes of an attorney and present a “mock trial” in a Riverside County courtroom.  The students’ family and friends attend the final presentation, and a graduation ceremony celebrates their achievements for the week.

The Law and Leadership Academy provides our youth with a positive learning experience within the criminal justice system, explores various career pathways in law enforcement, and raises awareness about the role of the District Attorney’s Office in the community. The Academy is offered free of charge each summer in the cities of Riverside, Murrieta, and Indio.
